Poetry Month, Day 11: Ghostly Face

Ghostly Face

A woman’s face looks out of the photo
Inescapable and yet unreal
Her smooth, white brow the sky
Her sunken, sad eyes, dark bushes against a fence
The bridge of her nose is the pale oblong of my brother’s face
Her cheeks, his shoulders, steady and proud
Her sullen mouth is comprised of shadows
For years, I’ve looked at this photo
And have seen only my family, grouped together in a smiling portrait
Tonight for the first time, I looked and saw
Her face
Unreal and inescapable
She cannot be unseen
She can only be looked past
In hopes of bringing the image clear again
